Mercedes CEO Teases Electric Addition to G Class, Hinting at Competition for Tesla’s Model Y.

Mercedes-Benz recently showcased a series of "nearly ready for production" concept cars, potentially surpassing Tesla with a range exceeding 466 miles on a single charge. This is in contrast to Tesla models that offer a range of just below 380 miles.

At the IAA Mobility auto show in Munich, Mercedes introduced the Concept CLA Class, which includes four distinct models: a sedan, a station wagon, and two types of SUVs. The company hasn't yet announced a production date. These vehicles each promise a range exceeding 750 kilometers (466 miles), outdoing Tesla’s Model 3 and Model S, known for their top ranges, that max out just below 375 miles on one charge.

In the meantime, BMW turned heads at the same event, launching a new electric vehicle featuring a longer range and swift charging capabilities. This highlights the relentless push by German car manufacturers to stay ahead in the intensifying EV race. Prominent European car giants, including Volkswagen and Renault, face mounting pressure from Chinese competitors in the affordable EV sector. Simultaneously, Tesla aims to transform its Berlin-based factory into Europe’s most extensive automotive manufacturing facility.

BMW's Vision Neue Klasse concept car boasts innovative battery cells, offering over 20% more energy storage than the brand's earlier batteries. Consequently, both the range and charging speeds are projected to see enhancements of up to 30% compared to prior models.

For Mercedes, the Concept CLA Class is designed to symbolize a brand-new electric vehicle segment of entry-level offerings. CEO Ola Källenius suggests this move aims to attract a wider audience, highlighting that these cars could effortlessly travel from Munich to Hamburg on a single charge. Overcoming 'range anxiety' might boost the brand’s allure, since consumers often factor in range when deciding on EV purchases.

Källenius also hinted at another upcoming vehicle, referencing the G class of SUVs, and mentioned, "The little G will be electric." This new vehicle might rival Tesla’s Model Y, which is also a compact SUV.
UBS analysts, after a sneak peek at Mercedes' forthcoming models, expressed robust confidence in the brand's product lineup for the upcoming few years. Furthermore, company management exuded confidence that these new EVs would match the profitability of their internal combustion engine counterparts, the analysts noted.
