UAE prepares to host the 28th UN Climate Change Conference; Highlights commitment to sustainability and peace.

At the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly's General Debate, UAE's Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem Al Hashimy, discussed pivotal subjects amid mounting global crises.

Al Hashimy said, "This year, the UAE proclaims it the 'Year of Sustainability' under the banner 'Today for Tomorrow,' emphasizing our collective duty to future generations deserving of thriving environments. We aspire to honor our founders' visions and are tasked with safeguarding our planet, its resources, and our cultural legacy."

She accentuated that amidst the profound challenges the globe faces – from armed conflicts and climate emergencies to rising extremism, racism, and hate – we're better equipped than ever before to tackle them. "Our technological advancements now enable us to devise innovative answers to these multifaceted issues," Al Hashimy observed.

Emphasizing global cooperation, Al Hashimy highlighted the need for a world order rooted in respect for nations' sovereignty and integrity. She criticized the 'us-versus-them' mindset and forceful actions, advocating for mutual respect and diplomacy instead.

She reiterated on regional issues, "The way forward for crises is a peaceful resolution. Our region grapples with wars and extremist views. The UAE promotes dialogue and fosters regional economic ties, driving stability and affluence."

Regarding the long-standing issue of the Tunb islands and Abu Musa, Al Hashimy firmly stated the UAE's unwavering claim. "Our rights over these islands remain intact. We'll persistently seek a resolution through dialogue or the International Court of Justice."

Al Hashimy also shed light on climate challenges, saying, "Climate change is a historical crossroad. Achieving the 1.5-degree target demands radical change, and contrary to some beliefs, the UAE is optimistic."

She mentioned the upcoming 28th session of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) hosted by the UAE, detailing its action points, including energy transition, climate finance, and safeguarding individuals transparently and inclusively.
